Notice to Schools 124/2014 − 20 October 2014

AusVELS Update: Review of the Australian Curriculum

Principals/Directors and Teachers

Main Points

The Australian Government recently released both the Final Report of the Review of the Australian Curriculum and the Initial Australian Government Response to the Review. The Commonwealth Minister for Education has indicated the Response to the Review will be the basis and framework for discussion with all State and Territory Ministers for Education at the Ministerial Council in December 2014. These documents and associated supplementary reports are available here: www.studentsfirst.gov.au/review-australian-curriculum

The Victorian Minister for Education has asked the Victorian Curriculum and Assessment Authority (VCAA) to review both the Report and the Response.

As a result of this process, the planned release of the second iteration of AusVELS will be delayed until 2015.

Schools should note that the advice provided in the F-10 Curriculum Planning and Reporting Guidelines will continue to apply in 2015. The Guidelines are available here: www.vcaa.vic.edu.au/Documents/auscurric/F-10CurriculumPlanningReporting (pdf - 1.05mb)

Consistent with previous advice, in 2015 schools will have the option to continue to use AusVELS for whole school curriculum planning and implementation or to update their curriculum provision as revised versions of curriculum domains are finalised and approved for release by the Victorian Minister for Education during 2015. Resources to support whole school curriculum planning can be found here: http://curriculumplanning.vcaa.vic.edu.au

The first year of required full implementation of the fully revised curriculum will continue to be 2017. Within this framework, timelines for curriculum implementation should be developed and determined through each school’s curriculum planning processes.

Further information on student reporting for government schools can be found here: www.education.vic.gov.au/school/teachers/support/Pages/studentreports.aspx

Catholic schools should refer to the CECV Circular 1 August 2014 for sector advice on student reporting. For sector specific curriculum planning guidelines, Catholic schools should refer to their Diocesan Office.

Action Required
