Expressions of Interest: New VCE Algorithmics Higher Education Scored Study (HESS)

Principals/Directors, VCE Coordinators and VCE Information Technology and Mathematics teachers

Main Points

The VCAA, in collaboration with the University of Melbourne and Monash University, has developed a new VCE Higher Education Scored Study (HESS), provisionally titled Algorithmics.

This Units 3 and 4 study, pitched at a demanding cognitive level, focuses on a new approach to solving real-world problems using algorithmic techniques.

Algorithmics will be a fully scored VCE subject.

It is designed for students with a strong mathematics and science background, and can be taken concurrently with VCE Information Technology: Software Development. For more details see the attached dcoument, Proposed VCE Algorithmics.

VCE Algorithmics (HESS) will be implemented in 2015, pending VCAA Board and VRQA approval.

Melbourne and Monash universities will provide innovative, online learning materials, such as week-by-week lecture recordings, other short instructional videos, readings and problem sets, which teachers can use in the classroom or students can use at their own pace.

Expressions of Interest should be emailed to christophersen.paula.p@edumail.vic.gov.au by Friday 30 May 2014.

Please provide the following information:

  • Provider name
  • Principal/Director name
  • Provider contact
  • Contact email
  • Name of supervising teacher

For providers who have expressed interest in offering this study in 2015, the VCAA is holding an information session from 10:00 am to 12:30 pm on Friday 20 June 2014. Further details of this session will be directly sent to providers.

Action Required

Principals/Directors should:

  • ensure this information is distributed to VCE Information Technology: Software Development and Mathematics teachers.

Critical Dates
