Documentary director Hollie Fifer shares her insights at Top Screen 2018

We were lucky to have Hollie Fifer, a documentary director based in Melbourne, officially open Top Screen 2018 on Thursday 8 March at the Australian Centre for the Moving Image.

Hollie's first documentary feature, the 2016 film The Opposition, had its world premiere at the International Documentary Film Festival in Amsterdam. Since then it has screened around the world in over 40 cities, and was the opening film at the Human Rights Arts & Film Festival at ACMI in 2017. The Opposition won the Grand Prize at Tahiti's FIFO film festival and was screened at the UN Human Rights Council in March 2017.

Drawing on her experience, Hollie shared valuable insights and advice for budding filmmakers, encouraging them to step back and see the big picture while embracing the creative process - which is inevitably filled with obstacles.

'Maybe it rained on your shoot so you had to change plans. Maybe while you were setting up a shot with your camera you discovered the lighting was more beautiful from another angle … If this happened to you - and I'm sure it did because there are no films without obstacles - then you have discovered something amazing. You have discovered that your artwork actually talks back to you.'

For more inspiring insights you can read Hollie Fifer's full Top Screen 2018 launch speech.

'The VCE Season of Excellence is really important to showcase how creative young people in Victoria are, and to show these young people that it is possible to be part of creative industries. It was really motivating and inspiring to be a part of that.'
