Victorian Student Number
Information for providers and their students
The Victorian Government has legislated and implemented a Victorian Student Number (VSN) for students in Victoria.
Since 2009 the VSN is a student identification number that has been assigned by the Department of Education and Training (DET) to all students in government and non-government schools, and to students below the age of 25 undertaking Vocational Education and Training with a TAFE, Registered Training Organisation or Adult and Community Education (ACE) provider (referred to collectively as VET Providers).
The VCAA is the business manager of the VSN and associated Victorian Student Register (VSR). We work closely with educational providers to ensure that there is a unique identity assigned to each individual. Where there is a misalignment with the data held on the system the VCAA will endeavor to resolve the identity of the individual before a VSN is issued.
The VSN provides the capability to accurately detect patterns of student movement through, and departure from, the Victorian education and training system. It will greatly improve the collection and analysis of timely and accurate data about education in Victoria, so that future investment in education and training can be planned in a reliable manner.
Please note: The VSN is necessary for school, TAFE and Registered Training Organisations (RTO’s) enrolments. VTAC does not require the VSN for university entrance enrolments, for VTAC applications you will need your VCAA student number. Your VCAA student number is located on your VCE Statement of Results and can be obtained from your school VCE Coordinator or by contacting the Student Records and Results unit by email to firstname.lastname@example.org
