This memorandum provides advice regarding the revised VCE VET Building and Construction program.

The revised VCE VET Building and Construction program has been extracted from 21844VIC Certificate II in Building and Construction (Bricklaying, Carpentry, Painting and Decorating) Preapprenticeship.

The advice in this memorandum will remain current until the Building and Construction program booklet is published on the VCAA website: http://www.vcaa.vic.edu.au/vet/programs/building/buildconst.html The booklet will also be published in hard copy and distributed to schools and training providers early in 2008. The advice in this memorandum is consistent with the advice to be published in the program booklet.

Program Structure & VCE VET unit entitlement

The VCE VET Building and Construction program provides students with the opportunity to partially complete the Certificate II in Building and Construction (Bricklaying, Carpentry, Painting and Decorating) Pre-apprenticeship. In order to provide maximum flexibility in delivery, a range of modules are available for inclusion in either the first or second year of the program. The VCE VET Unit 1 and 2 and VCE VET Unit 3–4 sequence for all streams will be based on an accrual of hours model with approximately 100 hours of training equating to a VCE VET unit.

Delivery advice

  • The “Workplace safety and industry induction” module is a prerequisite for most modules. It is to be commenced early in the first year of the program.
  • Hand tools modules from the selected stream are to be completed in the first year of the program as they provide students with the knowledge and skills appropriate to using hand tools in the chosen building industry sector.
  • It is recommended that a greater number of common theory modules be completed in the first year of the program.

Students completing the program will be entitled to VCE VET Units 1 and 2 and a 3-4 sequence. Credit towards the VCE will be awarded on a pro-rata basis for partial completion of the program on the basis of modules completed.
