Expression Of Interest – VELS Sample Programs Project

The VCAA is seeking expressions of interest from schools wishing to participate in the development of sample programs to support the implementation of the Victorian Essential Learning Standards (VELS). This project will provide opportunities for teachers to work collegially with educators from schools, curriculum and professional organisations who are leaders in VELS implementation.

The sample programs will focus on the domains of Personal Learning, Interpersonal Development, Thinking Processes and Information and Communications Technology and will be based on the good practice currently occurring in schools. They will provide models for implementing these domains from a whole school perspective that support discipline / subject-based approaches or integrated approaches to curriculum. The programs will be complemented by advice and resources such as planning documents, sample units of work, practical teaching and learning strategies and assessment ideas.

Schools can participate in the project in three ways:

  1. As part of a project team to develop the sample programs
  2. By providing advice and materials that can be used in the programs
  3. As part of an independent teacher reference group to review the materials.

1. Project team to develop sample programs

Teachers will work in a project team to develop sample programs and resources. We are seeking schools that are undertaking a coordinated approach to incorporating one or more of the above domains into curriculum programs and have developed any of the following:

  • plans for curriculum development and teacher professional learning
  • management processes and structures
  • teaching, learning and assessment strategies
  • strategies for monitoring the effectiveness of implementation.

The project team will meet from 9:30 am till 4:00 p.m. on the following dates:

  • Wednesday 29 August 2007 Planning
  • Thursday 6 and Friday 7 September 2007 Working Groups
  • Tuesday 9 October 2007 Review

The VCAA will provide grants to participating schools to cover teacher release costs. Schools selected for participation in the project team will be asked to nominate a school coordinator.

2. Provide advice and materials

Schools unable to attend the meetings above are invited to provide documentation they have developed around curriculum planning which supports teachers in implementing these domains in teaching and learning practices. The VCAA will contact these schools following the planning day held on Wednesday 29 August.

3. Teacher reference group

Curriculum leaders from a range of schools are invited to nominate for participation in an independent teacher reference group which will evaluate the usefulness of the programs and resources for school implementation and provide feedback prior to publication.

The reference group will meet from 9:30 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. on Thursday 18 October 2007 . A grant to cover teacher release costs will be paid to the school.
