Memorandum to Schools 88/200718 September 2007National Literacy and Numeracy Testing 2008The first National Literacy and Numeracy Tests will be conducted in May 2008. National Literacy and Numeracy Testing will involve students in Years 3, 5, 7 and 9 from all States and Territories. In Victoria approximately 260,000 students from all Government, Catholic and Independent schools will participate in the program. National Literacy and Numeracy Testing will replace the Achievement Improvement Monitor (AIM) statewide testing program that is currently conducted by the VCAA. For students, teachers and schools there will be little change from existing arrangements currently in place for the AIM tests, apart from students across Australia sitting identical tests on the same three days. The assessment program will be administered at the school level. TIMETABLENational Testing will be conducted for all four year levels on Tuesday 13 May, Wednesday 14 May and Thursday 15 May 2008.

It is anticipated that the format of the national assessments will be similar to the existing AIM tests. REPORTINGThe results from the National Literacy and Numeracy Tests will provide an important measure of how Australian schools and students are performing in the areas of reading, writing, spelling and numeracy. The results from the assessment program will be used for individual student reporting to parents, school reporting and aggregate reporting by States and Territories against national benchmarks.
