Memorandum to Schools 20/2008
11 March 2008
Working With Children Checks and Examinations Assistant Supervisors.
1. BACKGROUND
As schools would be aware, from 31 December 2007 the Working with Children Act 2005 requires people involved in child-related work to hold a Working With Children Check (WWCC).
The WWCC costs $71.70 and does not need to be renewed until 5 years have elapsed. It can be used for more than one job. A person currently registered with the Victorian Institute of Teaching is exempt from the requirement to have a WWCC. A person who has undergone a Criminal Records Check must also obtain a WWCC.
The VCAA has been unable to secure any waiver of fees for the 3 000 examination supervisors that will be employed by schools in 2008.
The VCAA is aware that the requirements of the Act may impact upon recruitment of examination Assistant Supervisors by schools (Chief Supervisors should already have been appointed). In 2008 the VCAA will assist schools by funding recruitment advertisements in suburban and regional newspapers across Victoria in the week commencing 7 April. The advertisements will be generic but provide space for the inclusion of the names of schools located in the distribution zone of the newspaper. Interested people will be asked to apply to local schools listed in the advertisement by 15 April.
Schools will continue to be responsible for the selection of supervisors in accordance with the VCAA guidelines in the VCE Administrative Handbook 2008. Appointments of Assistant Supervisors must be communicated to the VCAA by 24 April to ensure appropriate funding is provided.
