General Achievement Test (GAT) - Introduction of an Answer Book

General Achievement Test (GAT)

The VCAA is introducing online assessment of the GAT, which will be held on Friday 13 June 2008.

As a result of this initiative the generic script book in which students have recorded their responses traditionally will no longer be used. It will be replaced with a specially designed GAT Answer Book which can be more effectively scanned into the VCAA’s online marking system.

The GAT Answer Book will include:

  • the student’s name on the front cover as well as the student number
  • blank pages for rough work (which will not be assessed)
  • five lined pages for Writing Task 1
  • five lined pages for Writing Task 2
  • Multiple–choice answer page.

It is important to note that the multiple–choice answer page is a fixed page within the answer book and not a separate page as in past years.

Schools and students should also be aware that assessors will not be able to view the names of students. The front cover of the Answer Book is scanned for reconciliation purposes but is not presented to assessors online.

Sample Copy on VCAA webpage

A copy (PDF) of the new GAT Answer Book has been posted on the VCAA webpage at: http://www.vcaa.vic.edu.au/vce/exams/examcovers/2008examindex.html. It is recommended that students be advised of this so they can familiarise themselves with the format of the Answer Book prior to sitting the GAT.
