Memorandum to Schools 85/2008

3 October 2008

VCE Unit 3-4 Coursework Task score entry / VASS Release Version 8_15

As part of its quality assurance program the VCAA periodically validates assessment information that has been provided by schools using VASS.

The VCAA recognises that data entry, verification and monitoring are significant tasks at most schools and all schools undertake these responsibilities with the utmost diligence.

As part of the VCAA’s ongoing commitment to providing schools with the tools to support them in fulfilling these responsibilities, an additional report has been added to VASS in Release Version 8_15: SCHOOL ADMIN → School Statistics → Coursework Task Scores Summary.

This report allows VCE Coordinators and/or teachers to easily view summary level statistics on the range of initial school scores entered for VCE Unit 3-4 Coursework. This report can be used in conjunction with the RESULTS ADMIN → VCE Reports → School Assessed Tasks/Coursework Report (which provides a detailed list of task scores awarded at student level) to provide schools with a comprehensive analysis of the school assessment task scores they have entered.

Schools are asked to run the School Assessed Coursework Summary for Unit 3 Coursework and Unit 4 (if entered). Schools should verify that scores awarded for each Coursework Task use the 2008 Assessment Structure as published in the appropriate VCE Study Design and/or VCE Assessment Guide. In particular schools should check the following:

  • studies where the Assessment Structure has been revised for 2008 (Chemistry; English; English (ESL) and Philosophy)
  • studies where the Coursework Graded Assessment(s) includes one task that has a different score range to other tasks, e.g.,
Health and Human Development Graded Assessment 1 Unit 3 Coursework
    • Unit 3 Outcome 1 - Max Score 50
    • Unit 3 Outcome 2 Task 1 - Max Score 25, Task 2 - Max Score 25

It is recommended that the verification is undertaken by someone other than the person who entered the scores and that a printed version is signed-off by an appropriate senior member of staff.

Schools that identify an anomaly in their marking scale for Unit 3 Coursework should supply Student Records with the correct Coursework Task scores for each student affected advising the VCAA of the marking scale initially used. Schools that identify an anomaly in their marking scale for Unit 4 Coursework should make the necessary changes to student Coursework Task scores on VASS.

Schools are requested to complete this task by Monday 20 October.
