Memorandum to Schools 92/2008
10 October 2008
Unauthorised Examinations Material – Apple iPhone
The new apple iPhone is a mobile phone and is therefore not permitted to be brought into any VCE examination venue. However, as can be seen in the photographs on the next page, this phone has a scientific calculator function and when in this mode does not appear to be a mobile phone.
The VCAA is concerned that some students owning these phones and accustomed to using them as calculators may bring them into examinations for which scientific calculators are permissible.
We request that schools remind students that mobile phones cannot be permitted in VCE examinations and will be confiscated if brought into an examination venue. When students are permitted to use a scientific calculator in an examination they should ensure it complies with the advice on page 4 of their VCE Exams Navigator.
Could you please bring this memorandum to the attention of the staff who will be checking students’ calculators prior to their admission to examination rooms at your school in October/November.
