Notice No. 179/2010 - 1 December 2010
2010 Mathematical Methods (CAS) Examination 2
Main Points
- Four schools contacted the Victorian Curriculum and Assessment Authority (VCAA) last week to express concern that students using a particular calculator were potentially disadvantaged in answering question 3 parts (e) and (f) of the Mathematical Methods (CAS) Examination 2.
- The VCAA analysed the results of students using this technology with the results of all students sitting the paper and found no significant differences in responses to question 3 (f) worth 2 marks.
- However, the VCAA noted a potential issue for the performance of these students on question 3 (e) worth 4 marks.
- The VCAA calculated an estimated score for question 3(e) for all students based on their individual performance on the rest of the examination.
- To ensure that no student will be disadvantaged, the VCAA will award all students with either their estimated score or their achieved score on question 3(e), whichever is the higher.
Action required
