School Level

Schools conduct their own competition and select a maximum of two students to go on to the regional finals.

They use the entry form to submit to the VCAA name/s of the regional finalist/s. They send a cheque for $50.00 to the VCAA.

The VCAA informs the school of venue, date and times for their regional final.

Regional Level

The VCAA conducts regional finals across the state at host schools.

The VCAA provides host schools with details of the contestants who will compete at their venue.

The VCAA organises three ajudicators to attend each regional final. One finalist from each regional final is selected to go on to the state semi-finals.


The regional, semi and state finals of the 2008 Plain English Speaking Award have now taken place. The schedule for 2009 finals will be published early in 2009.

National Finals

The national winner for 2008 was Eleanor Gordon Smith from New South Wales. The runner-up was Mike Honiball from Western Australia. Eleanor and Mike will represent Australia in the International Public Speaking Competition held under the auspices of the English-Speaking Union in London, UK in May 2009.

The 2009 National Final will take place in Melbourne, Victoria on Monday 17 August 2009.

Prizes

  • Regional Finalists - certificate of participation
  • State Semi-finalists - Plain English Speaking Award lapel badge
  • State Finalists - certificate and book voucher
  • State Winner - personalised trophy for student and perpetual trophy for the student's school. The school trophy is returned at the end of the year
  • National Winner - trophy and $7000 to enable them to go England to represent Australia in the international competition for plain speaking. This $7000 is donated by B.B.M Ltd (previously Big Brother Movement)
  • National runner-up - $4500 towards the trip to England to represent Australia in the international competition for plain speaking. Of this, $3500 is donated by B.B.M Ltd and $1000 by the English-Speaking Union.
