Copyright Agency Ltd

Copyright Agency Limited (CAL) is a non-profit, member-based organisation that manages licensed copying and communication of literary, dramatic and artistic works. Their members are Australian authors, journalists, visual artists, and newspaper, magazine and book publishers. CAL acts as a channel between copyright rights holders and those who copy their works. CAL serves as an initial point of contact if, for example, you plan to set a literary work to music.

ARIA was established and operates to represent the broad interests of all member record companies. It acts as an advocate for the industry, domestically and internationally, and collects statistical information from members and retailers. Arts Law Centre

The Arts Law Centre of Australia is the national community legal centre for the arts. It is a not for profit company established with the support of the Australia Council. PPCA - Phonographic Performance Company of Australia

PPCA is a national, non-government, non-profit organisation representing record companies and recording artists. PPCA grants licenses to anyone publicly playing sound recordings or music videos. Licence fees are distributed to recording artists, record companies and to a trust fund that gives grants for music and the performing arts.

Screenrights

Screenrights, formerly trading as the Audio-Visual Copyright Society, is a non-profit copyright collecting society for producers, distributors, scriptwriters, music copyright owners, rights owners in artistic works and sound recordings and other rights holders in film and television. Screenrights administers certain rights in film and television programs on behalf of these copyright owners, collecting fees for the exercise of these rights and distributing this money to the relevant rights holders.

Following up clearance for use of non-original music

There a several steps you may need to follow:

  • You will need to find out who owns the rights to both the music and the lyrics in a recording.
  • You will need to write to the owners seeking written permission to use their composition in your work.
  • You will need to attach a copy of their written permission to your work whenever you enter it into festivals or awards.

AMCOS

The AMCOS website has useful documents regarding music and copyright, especially a brochure entitled Music Copyright for Schools.

AMCOS conduct information sessions for schools on music copyright. They do not charge a research fee for students using the AMCOS search service to locate copyright owners of music.

AMCOS also provide a service where they will perform a search on ownership to a music title. The form for this service can be downloaded from the AMCOS website at: www.amcos.com.au/
