When the Shire of Campaspe identified a severe infestation of bridal creeper along a stretch of the Campaspe River, they knew something had to be done. But tackling this extremely damaging and persistent weed required more resources than the council could spare. Enter the Senior VCAL students from St Joseph’s College Echuca. With assistance from the council’s environmental officer, Rhonda Day, the students spent four months mapping the infestation. They then produced a report to the Federal Government as part of a bid for funding to eradicate the infestation.

These organisations formed a partnership to create a program that gives VCAL students a unique opportunity to work in the Australian surf industry. Participants worked on the iconic World Championship Tour at Bells Beach. They also volunteered at numerous domestic surf events like the Rip Curl GromSearch and the Ocean and Earth Teenage Rampage. Surfing Vicoria now plans to establish a surf industry education centre in Torquay’s Surf City Plaza. The facility will enable future VCAL students to benefit from the partnership.
