Integrated Program

Lawrence Jordan from North Geelong Secondary College

Lawrence’s Foundation VCAL program addressed the unique learning needs of the eight English as a Second Language students who took part. The program included industry tours and a radio project, in which the students learned basic broadcasting skills and conducted interviews. It also included the Taste of TAFE initiative, in which the students sampled a range of VET training available at Gordon Institute of TAFE. Lawrence’s program engaged its participants in an accessible learning environment and has presented them with a range of potential career pathways.

Program Development

Anne-Maree Burgoine from Portland Secondary College

Portland Secondary College Principal
Toni Burgoyne, receiving
Anne-Maree Burgoine’s award on
her behalf from Minister Pike.

When hollow-bearing eucalypts in the bushland adjoining Portland Secondary College were marked for removal, Anne-Maree conceived a project to regenerate and revegetate the area. Developed over the last three years, the initiative has involved the College’s Senior VCAL classes, local community groups and government and industry bodies. It has been an outstanding success, yielding a noticeable regeneration of native flora, an increase in populations of local fauna and improved community relations in the Portland region.

Team Teaching

The Bendigo Senior Secondary College Teaching Team:

Nicole Cordy, Jane Fong, Rod Fyffe, Pam Hyden Sue Johnson, Rosalie Lake, Jennifer Moloney, Chris Pacher, Kirsten Thomas, & Jane Warne.

In 2008, the VCAL Advance Teaching Team at Bendigo Senior Secondary College established a vibrant open classroom Learning Community in the refurbished visitors centre at the site of the old Bendigo Prison. A variety of tools and resources have been made available to students there and the team have incorporated Red Cross Community Challenges into their delivery of VCAL. For their superb efforts, they have also been recognised with the Victorian Office for Youth 2008 Advance Award.

The Elisabeth Murdoch College Teaching Team:

Chad Ambrose, Amy Dean, Claise Janssen & Simon Wood.

Chad, Amy, Claise and Simon worked together to reinvigorate the VCAL program at Elisabeth Murdoch College. The team started by talking to the students themselves and used their feedback to develop the curriculum. The team’s program has yielded a significant increase in VCAL enrolments at the College and in the school’s senior secondary completion rates. They have since established a website that is recognised across the southern metropolitan region as a best practice model for developing a successful VCAL program.
