VCE English Exam: A Milestone for Greek Grandmother

A 56-year-old Greek-born grandmother will be among more than 40,000 Victorian students embarking on the VCE English exam this morning.
The students will sit the three-hour English and English as a Second Language (ESL) exams in more than 500 examination centres around Victoria, interstate and overseas.
Agatha Sarantinos, 56, who has longed to improve her English language skills since migrating to Australia 36 years ago, will sit the exam at the Council of Adult Education in Melbourne .
Education Minister Mary Delahunty wished all students the best for a successful exam season.
"The final VCE English exam is always a milestone but it is important to remember all the good work you have done at school to get to this point," she said.
"While the exams are a test of skill and knowledge, they also give students an opportunity to shine and I wish all students the very best for the future."
Victorian Curriculum and Assessment Authority chief executive Susan Pascoe said years of study would serve students well in the exams starting today.
"More than 74, 000 students will be sitting at least one VCE exam over the next three weeks," she said.
" I encourage all students to be positive and confident when walking into the exam rooms, wherever they may be."
VCE exams will continue until November 23. Students will receive their results from 7am on December 17 through a joint Internet/telephone service run by the Victorian Curriculum and Assessment Authority and the Victorian Tertiary Admissions Centre. Results will be posted to students on December 18.
