Young Dancers and Musicians at Centre Stage in VCE Exams

8 October 2001

From the Office of the Minister for Education

Over 5355 students will start putting on their dancing shoes or running sound checks from this week as the 2001 VCE Performance Exams begin.

Performance exams in music, dance and drama will run in 48 examination centres throughout Victoria until Sunday, November 4.

Around 227 assessors will watch over 2700 hours of performances as students turn up the volume in rock bands, acoustic quartets and solo music and drama pieces.

Monday, October 8 also marks the start of oral exams for VCE students. Around 9800 students will sit exams in 47 languages including Australian Indigenous Language.

Education Minister Mary Delahunty wished all the performance and language students the very best for their VCE exams.

"These exams will be just one part of a long learning process. I encourage students to continue to hone their skills in language and the arts and I believe their hard work throughout the year will pay off."

Victorian Curriculum and Assessment Authority chief executive Susan Pascoe urged students to see the exams as opportunities to show their creative flair.

"Students who have chosen to study drama, dance, music and language should walk into their exams feeling relaxed and knowing that they have an opportunity to express themselves creatively to an audience," she said.

Exams starting in Melbourne this week include dance at South Melbourne and rock bands at Kingston Arts Centre in Moorabbin.
