30 July 2002
From the Minister for Education and Training
Education and Training Minister Lynne Kosky today launched a comprehensive education and training guide, Where to Now? to assist students to choose a career path which best suits their needs and aspirations.
Addressing students at Karingal Secondary College , Frankston, Ms Kosky said Where to Now? would be distributed to every Year 10 student
"This resource explores a range of education and training options for students preparing for years 11 & 12," she said.
"Every Year 10 student throughout Victoria will receive a copy of Where to Now? over the next few weeks, and I encourage each student to take the time to read it and consider carefully the available pathways to further education, training and employment."
Developed by the Department of Education and Training in conjunction with the Victorian Curriculum and Assessment Authority (VCAA) and the Victorian Qualifications Authority (VQA), Where to Now? was a vital first step for students planning their future, Ms Kosky said.
Where to now? provided subject selection and information about VCE programs - including Vocational Education Training (VET) subjects – and the Victorian Certificate of Applied Learning (VCAL), currently being trialled.
The booklet will also be available at TAFE institutes, Local Learning and Employment Networks (LLENs), Adult & Community Education (ACE) providers, and Centrelink offices.
Ms Kosky said the Bracks Government had made education its number one priority and aimed to ensure young Victorians were equipped with the knowledge and skills to realise their individual ambitions.
"We have set a target that by 2010, 90 per cent of students will complete Year 12 or its equivalent. In order to achieve this goal, we have expanded the learning options available in Years 11 and 12 and created new learning pathways that lead to formal educational qualifications."
"Where to Now? details the full range of those options."
