Holden and State Government Building Pathways to Education, Training and Jobs
30 July 2002
From the Minister for Education and Training
Education and Training Minister Lynne Kosky today congratulated car manufacturer Holden for joining a unique program offering Year 11 and 12 students two years paid work experience, a TAFE qualification and VCE.
At a visit to the Frankston campus of Chisholm Institute of TAFE today, Ms Kosky said Holden's involvement in the T3 program was part of the State Government's drive to increase pathways for young people between education, training and jobs.
"Young people on this unique program leave school with their VCE, a nationally recognised TAFE qualification and two years' paid work experience with Holden," Ms Kosky said.
T3 traineeships are available in the areas of Office Administration and Vehicle Servicing.
The program, which is based on a similar program delivered by TAFE in NSW, originally started in Victoria last year with Toyota dealerships.
Ms Kosky said it was fantastic to have another car company on board.
"The new agreement is between Holden and Kangan Batman Institutes of TAFE," she said.
"Typically, students will spend the equivalent of one day a week at work, three-and-a-half days a week at school and half a day a week in a Certificate II course at Chisholm Institute or Kangan Batman TAFE."
Ms Kosky said the Bracks Government was committed to ensuring that more and more young Victorians successfully completed Year 12 or equivalent.
"But to reach this target we have to be creative and innovative in the education and training pathways we provide young people," Ms Kosky said.
"We want 90 per cent of young people to successfully complete Year 12 or an equivalent by 2010.
"T3 is a wonderful example of the creative solutions this Government is putting in place in partnership with employers and our education and training system to benefit young Victorians."
Ms Kosky said more young people were realising that different education and training options – whether it be the VCE, combining VCE with VET units or participating in the new Victorian Certificate of Applied Learning (VCAL) – opened more doors of opportunity.
The T3 program will be available at participating Holden dealerships in metropolitan Melbourne .
