Students to receive exam results on time
6 December 2002
Students are scheduled to receive VCE results on time, despite ongoing investigations into a possible security exam breach, Victorian Curriculum Assessment Authority (VCAA) chief executive officer Susan Pascoe said today.
The Authority has quarantined the regular processing of results from the investigation, and Ms Pascoe has assured students their results will not be affected by the investigation.
Ms Pascoe said the authority had signed off on all VCE assessments and will forward VCE data to the Victorian Tertiary Admissions Centre (VTAC) on Sunday in line with the scheduled release of results on December 16.
Late last month, the authority uncovered a possible security breach in this year's VCE exams after tip-offs and consequent database analyses, which indicated anomalies between some students' exam results and other results in those subjects.
An investigation into the possible breach was initiated. To date the investigation has shown that suspicious results are confined to a group of students from up to 11 schools.
Former WA Police Commissioner and Victorian Assistant Commissioner of Police, Bob Falconer, is assisting the VCAA with its inquiries. The authority has also had ongoing communication and assistance from Victoria Police.
Ms Pascoe said a number of students will appear before the authority's Discipline Committee and a number of schools will have their authority to conduct VCE exams reviewed.
Ms Pascoe said students under suspicion of receiving an unfair advantage will not get their results at the same time as other students across the State.
"Students suspected of having had an unfair advantage will not only be withdrawn from the regular processing of results but will be brought before the Discipline Committee," Ms Pascoe said.
Ms Pascoe said the additional Discipline Committee hearings will begin on Tuesday, December 17.
Penalties for students found guilty range from the downgrading of results to the cancellation of their Victorian Certificate of Education (VCE).
