Performance Students Dance Their Way into VCE Exams

7 October 2002

Some 5362 students will dance, act and sing to a different tune as VCE Performance exams begin today.

Performance exams in music, drama, theatre studies and dance will take place at 48 venues throughout regional and metropolitan Victoria.

240 assessors across the six studies will examine the performances, which include music solos, rock compositions and dance routines.

Drama is still the most popular subject with more than 1700 students undertaking the exam.

Today also marks the beginning of oral language exams for VCE students of languages other than English.

About 10,200 students will present oral examinations in front of 700 assessors, at 13 venues in 44 languages, including Lithuanian, Khmer and Arabic.

Minister for Education and Training Lynne Kosky wished all students the very best in their exams over the next few weeks.

"These exams are part of a life-long learning process," Ms Kosky said. "I encourage students to do their best and I know that all their hard work undertaken throughout the year will pay off."

Victorian Curriculum and Assessment Authority chief executive Susan Pascoe said students had the opportunity to express themselves creatively in the performance exams.

"We have carefully prepared the exam environment to enable students to relax and do their best," Ms Pascoe said.

"These exams are an opportunity for students to express their creative talents."
