VCE Student Films Shine on the Silver Screen
1 May 2003
Move over Baz Lurrhman - it's show time for 15 top VCE filmmakers.
Former Year 12 media studies students from schools across Victoria will showcase short works as part of Top Screens 2003 from Monday, May 5, at the Australian Centre for the Moving Image, Federation Square.
Top Screens is part of the VCE Season of Excellence 2002 - a celebration of student talent by last year's VCE students.
Among young people to showcase short films at this year's festival are former Princess Hill Secondary College student Spike McKenzie, whose art house film called Cliché, pays homage to European cinema.
Also presenting films will be former Melbourne High School student Martin Funich, whose computer generated animated promo Operation Nippansandai, makes effective use of 3D and former Brauer College student Alex Francis whose film, Nerd Wars, affectionately shows the plight of cinema fans.
Victorian Curriculum and Assessment Authority chairman, Professor Kwong Lee Dow said the level of achievement by last year's VCE media students was exceptional.
"We congratulate each of these talented film makers. The enthusiasm and ingenuity inherent in their films will serve as inspiration not just to the students embarking on their design plans and media productions in 2003, but to all who attend these screenings," Prof. Lee Dow said.
Seasons manager Merren Ricketson said the Victorian Curriculum and Assessment Authority and The Australian Centre for the Moving Image took great pride in presenting Top Screens 2003.
"This is an entertaining and provocative festival," Ms Ricketson said. "Students from VCE Media in 2002 have utilized a variety of genre, including music video, documentary, parody and narrative - in both animated and live production formats. Each work is a benchmark in its medium - each film truly original and distinctive."
Ms Ricketson said the films were selected from a total of 186 short films submitted by students across Victoria. The works are also presented at the Top Designs exhibition showing until July 13 at Melbourne Museum.
Top Screens 2003 will show at the Australian Centre for the Moving Image, Federation Square, Flinders Street, Melbourne at 7pm on May 5, 1.30pm on May 6 and 9.30am, 12.30pm and 7pm on May 7, 2003. Tickets are $7 and $5. Screening and industry panel sessions from 9.30am on May 6 and 12.30pm and 7pm on May 7, 2003.
