Books in VCE English
[27 September 2005]
The Victorian Curriculum and Assessment Authority (VCAA) announced today that VCE English students would continue to study a minimum of either four books or three books and a film.
Acting Chief Executive Officer, John Firth said, “We put out a consultation proposal to prompt discussion around what changes are needed in relation to this crucial VCE subject.
“We have welcomed the widespread debate which shows the high value that the community places on VCE English. Much of the public comment has been focussed on the number of books students will need to study.
“We have listened and heard the view of the community and moved to ensure that the study of books remains central in VCE English,” Mr. Firth said.
“I want to clearly state the VCAA position. We will not be changing the number of books prescribed by the VCAA that students are required to study for VCE English.
“Substantial consultation with teachers and the community indicates that central prescription of literary texts is valued because it ensures quality and common expectations for all students,” Mr. Firth said.
Mr. Firth said that the review of the course was seeking to improve VCE English.
“The aim of the review is to further improve the rigour and challenge of the certificate. We will continue to ensure that VCE students maintain the highest standards of reading and writing,” he said.
The VCAA’s community consultation will continue and interested people are urged to make their submissions until the closing date of Friday October 7.
