Small Increase in VCE Scores for 3,221 Students
[January 10, 2007]
Some 3,221 students have had their scores for VCE Maths Methods, Specialist Maths, and Food and Technology increased by up to two points after the Victorian Curriculum and Assessment Authority (VCAA) re-calculated their results.
The VCAA has written to these students advising them of changes to their results, which were adjusted after the VCAA discovered an error in the initial calculation of results.
No other VCE subjects have been affected. Results remain unchanged for most of the 79,724 students who did a VCE subject last year.
VCAA chief executive John Firth said no student would have their VCE results lowered as a consequence of the VCAA’s revised calculation of results.
Mr Firth apologised to the students for any inconvenience the error may have caused.
“For most students in these subjects, study scores will remain unchanged. A small proportion of students will have their study score increased by one or two points. Over 99% of these will be an increase of one point,” Mr Firth said.
As a result of the VCAA’s adjustment of results:
- 2,593 VCE Maths Methods, Maths Methods (CAS) and Specialist Maths students will receive an increased study score for one or more of these subjects;
- 630 VCE Food and Technology students have been issued with increased study scores for that subject.
Mr Firth said that some students with increased study scores would also receive a new ENTER (Equivalent National Tertiary Entrance Rank) from VTAC (the Victorian Tertiary Admissions Centre).
“The VCAA has worked closely with VTAC to ensure that no student will be disadvantaged as a result of these changes,” Mr Firth said.
“All changed results and ENTERs will be correctly updated in time for the first round of tertiary offers on January 16.
“Each student’s amended results will be sent to tertiary selection officers for all courses on their list of preferences in time to be considered for the first round.”
VTAC has also written to students whose ENTERs have increased to advise them of these changes.
Any student with concerns about their new ENTER or their list of course preferences can contact VTAC.
“VTAC will work closely with tertiary institutions to ensure the tertiary application process will run smoothly for these students.”
Late last week, the VCAA found that incorrect weightings were used to calculate study scores for Maths Methods, Maths Methods (CAS) and Specialist Maths. The VCAA also discovered an anomaly in the weightings used to calculate results for VCE Food and Technology.
“The VCAA immediately re-calculated all results for these subjects and wrote to all affected students advising them of the changes to their scores. Students will receive their amended VCE results today (Wednesday, January 10).”
Students who have queries about their Study Score for VCE Maths Methods, Maths Methods (CAS), Specialist Maths, Food and Technology can contact the VCAA on (03) 9651 4402.
For information on ENTER scores, these students can contact VTAC (www.vtac.edu.au) on 1300 364 133.
