National Assessment Program - Literacy and Numeracy 2008
The first national tests in literacy and numeracy will be conducted in May 2008.
The National Assessment Program - Literacy and Numeracy (NAPLAN) will involve students in Years 3, 5, 7 and 9 from all States and Territories. In Victoria 260,000 students from all Government, Catholic and Independent schools will participate in the program. This program will replace the Achievement Improvement Monitor (AIM) Statewide testing program that is currently conducted by the VCAA.
For students, teachers and schools there will be little change from the arrangements currently in place for the AIM tests, apart from students across Australia sitting identical tests on the same three days. The NAPLAN will be administered at the school level.
Timetable
The NAPLAN will be conducted for all four year levels in 2008 on:
- Tuesday 13 May: Language Conventions and Writing
- Wednesday 14 May: Reading
- Thursday 15 May: Numeracy
Test content
Like the current AIM tests, the NAPLAN tests will assess:
- Reading
- Writing
- Language Conventions (including spelling, grammar and punctuation)
- Numeracy (includes a calculator and a non-calculator test for Year 7 and Year 9 students)
It is anticipated that the format of the NAPLAN materials will be similar to the existing AIM test materials.
Reporting
The results from the NAPLAN tests will provide an important measure of how Australian schools and students are performing in the areas of reading, writing, spelling and numeracy.
The results from the NAPLAN will be used for individual student reporting to parents, school reporting and aggregate reporting by States and Territories against national standards.
Additional information will be added as it becomes available.
