VASS New Users Professional Development November - December 2008

The VCAA will be conducting VASS New Users Professional Development training during late November and early December 2008 at the following metropolitan CASES Centres:

  • Southern Metropolitan Region SERCT Centre:- Greenslopes PS, Gloria Ave, Dandenong
  • Northern Metropolitan Region Training Centre:- Newlands PS, Elizabeth Street, Coburg
  • Eastern Metropolitan Region Training Centre:- Parkmore PS, Jolimont Rd, Forest Hill
  • Western Metropolitan Region Training Centre:- Clarendon Street, Avondale Heights

Another round of training will be held in late January into February 2009. Regional venues will be included in this later round of training. Expression of Interest forms for the 2009 training sessions will be sent to schools in December 2008.

This training is designed specifically for new VASS Administrators. This includes new schools offering a VCE, VET or VCAL program for the first time.

Teacher Professional Learning: Assessment for Better Learning using NAPLAN Data

The Victorian Curriculum and Assessment Authority (VCAA) are providing a Teacher Professional Learning Program for the NAPLAN Data Service. The program will be delivered on behalf of the VCAA by School Research Evaluation and Measurement Services (SREAMS), at no cost to participants and principals will receive an invitation letter from SREAMS in the first week of Term 4.

The program, called Assessment for Better Learning using NAPLAN Data, will focus on two main themes:

  • How classroom teachers can use the responses to questions on the NAPLAN 2008 tests as a diagnostic tool to inform them about the strengths and weaknesses of students in their classes
  • How curriculum leaders and classroom teachers can use their school-level data to analyse the impact of their school’s learning programs.

The Teacher Professional Learning program will be offered as a three-hour workshop to be delivered during October and November. These three-hour workshops are for principals, NAPLAN co-ordinators and classroom teachers and are free of charge to participants.

VCAL Induction Workshop on 5 November 2008

This memorandum contains information relating to the VCAL Induction Workshop which is being held on Wednesday, 5 November 2008, at Moonee Valley Racing Club, Moonee Ponds, from 8.30am to 3.45pm.  The Induction Workshop will focus on the following aspects of the VCAL:

  • Curriculum
  • Structure
  • Partnerships
  • Resources
  • Quality Assurance.

The VCAA would like to invite providers who have a new VCAL Coordinator or a new VCAL Teacher starting in 2009 to attend this Induction Workshop. Places are limited so registrations will be limited to one registration per provider and priority will be given to providers who are delivering VCAL for the first time in 2009.

There is no registration cost associated with attending this workshop. However, no CRT will be available.

Special VASS New Users Training

Due to an extraordinary level of demand for VASS Training from newly appointed VASS Administrators a special training session has been organised for Tuesday 12 August. 

This session will be conducted at the VCAA Assessment Centre, 189 Urquhart Street, Coburg (Melways map reference 18 A12) and will run for three hours from 1.00pm to 4.00pm.   

The session will cover all aspects of VASS data entry for the remainder of the 2008 school year (enrolments for VCE, VET and VCAL and the entry of results).

Participants attending this session will still be able to attend one of the full days VASS New User’s Professional Development sessions which will be held in November/December 2008 and January/February 2009. Information regarding these sessions will be sent out in October 2008 and December 2008 respectively.

The session will be computer based ‘hands on’ training with a short break for afternoon tea.  It is not necessary to bring a laptop computer.  Registration will commence at 12.30pm.

On Demand Professional Development - Metropolitan Centres - August 2008

The VCAA is conducting a series of Professional Development training programs in Melbourne Metropolitan venues for those schools using or intending to use the On Demand testing application for the first time this year. This follows the On Demand training programs that were held in country Regional centres in May and June 2008.

Intended audience include Assessment and Reporting Coordinators, Curriculum Coordinators, interested teachers and DEECD Central and Regional Office administrators.

VCE Design And Technology Teacher Professional Learning At Melbourne Museum

The State Reviewer for the School-assessed Task will discuss requirements and assessment criteria for the School-assessed Task, and available resources. Teachers are able to view the Top Designs exhibition prior to hearing from the State Reviewer. A teacher and their student whose work appears in the exhibition will discuss their experiences and how teachers can best assist students in the School-assessed Task.
Marc Pascal, a local Industrial designer will also discuss his approach to product design.

VCE Media Teacher Professional Learning At Melbourne Museum

The State Reviewer for the School-assessed Task will discuss requirements and assessment criteria for the School-assessed Task, and available resources. Teachers are able to view the Top Designs exhibition prior to hearing from the State Reviewer. A teacher and their students whose work appears in the exhibition will discuss their experiences and how teachers can best assist students in the development of the School-assessed Task.

Filmmaker and director Dustin Feneley was a graduate of the Masters Degree in Film Direction at the Victorian College of the Arts. His films have been screened widely and won numerous international festival awards including his short film Snow (2005), which was screened in the official selection at the 2006 Cannes Film Festival. Dustin will present a contemporary outlook and offer valuable insight and inspiration for teachers and students interested in the film industry.

VCE Physics Briefings – May/June 2008

Professional development workshops to support the implementation of the newly accredited VCE Physics Study Design are to be conducted by the Australian Institute of Physics (Vic Branch) Education Committee (AIP) and the Science Teachers Association of Victoria (STAV) in partnership with the VCAA.

The purpose of the workshops is to assist teachers to adapt their courses for the new VCE Physics Study Design commencing in 2009. The workshops will focus on changes to the study design for Units 1 to 4 and will include implications for teaching and assessment.

VCE Coordinator Briefings – April/May 2008

VCE Briefings for VCE Coordinators or those considering taking on the role are being conducted by the VCAA.

The briefings will offer schools the opportunity to refresh their understanding of the school’s role in the quality assurance processes of the VCE.

The briefings of two hours duration will focus on:

  • Processes involved in the review of VCE studies, consultation and publication processes, implementation support and the responsibilities of schools
  • School assessed coursework audit, school assessed tasks and visitation and the role of schools when reporting to the VCAA
  • Study score and statistical moderation.

Schools are strongly encouraged to participate and up to two people per school may register.

There is no cost to teachers for this program. Afternoon tea will be provided during the session.

VCE Food And Technology Teacher Professional Learning At Melbourne Museum

A teacher and their students whose work appears in the exhibition will discuss their experiences and how teachers can best assist students in the development of the School-assessed Task.

Author of the book The Conscious Cook, Giselle Wilkinson will discuss the importance of developing foods that have minimum impact on the environment, by choosing ingredients with awareness, selecting locally and seasonally grown produce. This presentation will inspire a new approach appropriate to the twenty-first century and the challenges we face particularly in relation to climate change.

Professional Development Sessions 2008 – The VCE Data Service

The Victorian Curriculum and Assessment Authority cordially invite members of your school’s VCE leadership team to attend a professional development session on the VCE Data Service (VCEDS).

The VCEDS provides each school with confidential information on the performance of their VCE students. It is an online service that makes use of the potential of Internet delivery to assist schools analyse their VCE results. Users can access their own school data as far back as 1998.

The program is designed to be useful and informative for new users as well as for experienced users of VCEDS. It will cover how to gain access to VCEDS, what VCEDS can do for your school, and will suggest strategies for getting the best out of VCEDS 2008.

Each two-hour session is provided free of charge (including light refreshments). Sessions have been organised to take place in each region of the state, commencing on 3 March 2008 and running until 10 April 2008.

To take advantage of this opportunity, please ensure that all relevant staff (eg, Principal, Deputy Principal, VCE Coordinator, Curriculum Coordinator, Faculty Head / Coordinator) complete the attached registration form and return by fax to Christal Belayiannis at the VCAA on 03 9651 4504. Registration closes 5.00pm Friday 22 February 2008.

It is expected that most schools will attend the session in their region. However, if the date or venue is not suitable please indicate an alternative session.
