- For 2011 - 2012, the VELS is the curriculum for government and Catholic schools. It is available here.
- At the end of 2012, the VELS website will be archived and replaced by the AusVELS website.
- The AusVELS website will be available from Term 4, 2011 to assist teachers in their planning, professional development and trialling of the Australian Curriculum F-10 learning areas (English, Mathematics, Science and History).

- From 2013, AusVELS will be the F-10 curriculum for Victorian government and Catholic schools and will provide a model for independent schools of how the new Australian Curriculum subjects can be incorporated into existing school-based curriculum programs.

All schools are required to report student achievement twice a year using A - E or an equivalent five-point scale.
- There will be no changes to the format of reporting student achievement for government and Catholic schools in 2011 or 2012.

While schools must assess and report against the achievement standards from the designated AusVELS domains, schools do have flexibility in the organisation and structure of the learning program. For example, schools can use the five outcomes from the Victorian Early Years Learning and Development Framework as the curriculum organisers for the early years teaching and learning program.

- For government and Catholic schools, current reporting arrangements will continue in 2011-2012. This includes the requirement that schools report only on English, Mathematics, The Arts, Health and Physical Education and Interpersonal Development in years F-2.
- Independent schools will be required to comply with the National Funding Agreement, that is, substantial implementation of English, Mathematics, Science and History by 2013.

- It is expected that the learning program available for all students will draw on each of the eight learning areas.
- Schools retain the final responsibility for design of appropriate student learning programs.
- Schools continue to be able to offer VCE, and VET subjects to students in Years 9 and 10.

- ACARA is developing teaching resources to support the teaching of EAL/D students.
- Government and Catholic schools in Victoria should continue to use the ESL scales for curriculum planning and assessment.

- The current ‘VELS Students with Disabilities Guidelines’ will be updated to reflect the development of AusVELS.
