James' Success Story

James’ brothers have been influential in shaping his academic and career path. One brother is doing Commerce/Law and the other is an accountant. ‘Their experiences made me want to focus on business studies too. It is something I am well suited to and I enjoy it.’
With guidance from his teachers, James chose to do a Bachelor of Business at Swinburne University. He plans to major in Human Resources Management and International Business. ‘I think I relate to people well so I can see myself in HR on the motivational side of things and International Business because I want to travel and work overseas.’
The course will also have a twelve-month Industry Based Learning component which James thinks will give him an advantage over other graduates when he starts working. ‘It will give me experience and provide a foot in the door into the industry.’ This is the reason he chose to do this course over others which might have a higher ENTER requirement.
Like many other VCE students James, from Wesley College Glen Waverley, completed a Units 3 and 4 subject in Year 11. He chose Business Management on his brother’s advice because he thought he would enjoy it. ‘Doing Business Management was vital in shaping my subject choices and it helped me understand what to expect in Year 12.’
James’ advice is to ‘keep everything in check and don’t get too stressed. Don’t take things too seriously, high marks aren’t everything. Try your best and that’s all you can do’.
