Student Card of Tessa

When Tessa was in Years 9 and 10 at Maryborough Education Centre, she had no idea what she wanted to do on completing secondary school. So, for her VCE, she chose a wide range of subjects. Her philosophy was to ‘pick subjects that I enjoy, which will make them easier to study’.

One of these was the VCE VET program Desktop Publishing and Printing, which she found so interesting that she decided to follow this path – for now. On leaving school Tessa was offered a traineeship as a typesetter in Maryborough.

In her job, Tessa is putting into practice the skills required for the pre-press industry, skills she developed during her VET program at school. She is thrilled to find that her work involves typesetting books. She can be creative while working with language and computer programs. ‘A great mix.’

Tessa knows that people often change careers during their lives and says she may want to pursue a career in psychology or health one day. These are interests that she also developed while studying VCE Psychology and Health and Human Development.

Tessa’s advice to VCE students is ‘Have a positive attitude towards your study and that will make it easier. Think positively and you will want to study at home. And, of course, choose subjects that you like and you will probably do well in them.
