Victorian Certificate of Education (VCE) in 2008

VCE graduates, 2008

  • Number of students eligible to graduate with the VCE in 2008: 50 897.

VCE enrolments, 2008

  • Number of students enrolled in at least one Unit 3 and 4 sequence (Year 12 study) in 2008: 85 914
  • Number of Year 11 students enrolled in at least one Unit 3 and 4 sequence in 2008: 30 338
  • Number of students in the International Baccalaureate (IB) who sat the General Achievement Test (GAT) in June: 633.

Victorian Certificate of Applied Learning (VCAL) in 2008

  • In 2007 there were 14 093 students enrolled in any level of the Victorian Certificate of Applied Learning (VCAL). They were enrolled with 418 providers
  • 67.7% were enrolled in government schools. Of the students enrolled in VCAL 60% were male and 40% were female.
  • There are three levels of certificate in VCAL – Foundation, Intermediate and Senior. Of the total 2007 VCAL enrolments, 30.1% students were enrolled in Foundation, 48.4% in Intermediate and 21.5% in Senior and Senior Extension
  • Preliminary 2008 data indicate that currently there are 14 795 enrolments in VCAL. Final 2008 figures for VCAL will be available late January 2009.

Vocational Education and Training (VET) in 2008

  • In 2007 there were 55 249 Vocational Education and Training (VET) in school enrolments. There has been some further growth this year. Final 2008 enrolment figures for VET will be available in January 2009.
  • Approximately 7 125 of these VET students are undertaking a School-based Apprenticeship. In order to become an apprentice or trainee, students must be in paid work and have signed a contract of training which is registered with Skills Victoria

General statistics for 2008

  • The 2008 written examinations begin at 9 am on Friday 31 October when 47 411 students will sit the VCE English examination, including English as a Second Language (ESL).
  • The VCE subject with the most students is English (47 411 candidates which includes 3450 doing ESL).
  • In 2008 there are 45 741 female and 40 173 male VCE students enrolled in at least one Units 3 and 4 sequence.
  • A total of 499 examination centres will operate in schools across the state.
  • The largest examination centre is Bendigo Senior Secondary College with 1103 students sitting examinations. The smallest are Cann River P–12 College and Lavers Hill P–12 College, each with four students sitting examinations.
  • In 2008 there are 108 VCE subjects (including Vocational Education and Training (VET)) on which students will be examined.
  • There are 46 Languages Other Than English (LOTE) ranging from Albanian to Yiddish.
  • Mature age students (studying VCE for Adults) account for 1051 of the students who will sit examinations in October and November.

October 2008 examinations (LOTE and performance)

  • There are seven VCE performing arts subjects with examinations in October: Dance, Drama, Theatre Studies, Music Performance, VET Dance and VET Music.
  • The performing arts subject with the highest enrolment is Drama with 1744 students.
  • A total of 6137 students will have at least one performance examination in October.
  • There are 42 LOTE subjects with an oral examination in October.
  • The LOTE subject with the highest enrolments is Chinese with 2896 enrolments across three levels (Chinese First Language 1901, Chinese Second Language 671, Chinese Second Language Advanced 324). The next most popular LOTE is French with 1918 enrolments.
  • A total of 10 931 students will have at least one oral examination in October.
  • The VCAA employs 1001 assessors for the LOTE orals and performance examinations in October.
  • A total of 91 examination centres will be used for the LOTE orals and performance examinations in October.

October/November 2008 written examinations

  • In 2008 there are a total of 85 914 students sitting at least one examination in November. These students are enrolled in at least one Units 3 and 4 sequence and most of them are in Year 12. All of them will receive a Statement of Results in December.
  • There will be a total of 117 written examinations. The timetable is published in this manual.
  • Written examinations are marked up to three times. A total of 758 000 markings will take place prior to the release of final results.
  • Four hundred and ninety-nine schools will be used as centres for the written examinations. The VCAA employs 3018 supervisors at these centres during the written examination period.
  • It is anticipated that around 2317 assessors will mark the written examinations.

Sitting examinations outside Victoria in 2008

  • Six Victorian students will sit their VCE examinations interstate.
  • Twenty-six Victorians will sit examinations in twelve overseas locations.
  • Students are allowed to sit VCE examinations overseas if they are representing Australia in an official capacity such as a sporting or cultural event. There will be VCE examination centres in North America, Europe and Asia.
  • There are also students who study VCE overseas. This year 247 overseas students will sit the VCE (236 in China and eleven in Vanuatu). See the VCAA International Projects page for more information.

Publication of 2008 results in the media

The VCAA will provide The Age and The Herald Sun with the following information for publication in the week beginning 15 December:

  • students’ achievement by study – lists of VCE studies with the name of students who achieved study scores of 40–50, and their schools
  • school information – including details of school programs, student cohort and students’ achievement.
