A Guide to School Based Apprenticeships (SBA)

Introduction

A student may choose to undertake a vocational training pathway within a part-time employment arrangement. The student will be required to enter into a formal training contract. If a student is enrolled in a school and is over 15 years of age, he/she may undertake a SBA. A SBA comprises:

  • Enrolment in the VCE or VCAL
  • Enrolment at a Registered Training Organisation (RTO) in a structured vocational training program that leads to a vocational qualification
  • Part-time, paid work.

Students should only enrol in a SBA if:

  • They are 15 years of age or over
  • They are in relevant employment
  • The Principal or Principal’s delegate has signed the Training Plan and the student is enrolled in a nationally recognised qualification that can be undertaken as a SBA.
