Chemistry

Clarification

Units 3 and 4

To assist teachers to select and plan suitable assessment tasks to satisfy School-assessed Coursework requirements, the following clarification is provided.

Unit 3

There are three assessment tasks required. One assessment task is the extended experimental investigation that is drawn from one area of study – either Area of Study 1 or Area of Study 2. This task is worth 50 marks.

The two other assessment tasks are drawn from the area of study NOT used for the extended experimental investigation. The two other assessment tasks are the written report of a practical activity, and one other task (selected from a response to stimulus material in written, oral or visual format; or an analysis of first- or second-hand data using structured questions; or a report in written, oral, multimedia or visual format related to chemical pathways).

Each of the two tasks is worth 25 marks.

(Refer page 23 of the study design.)

Unit 4

There are three assessment tasks required.

One assessment task is a summary report including annotations of three practical activities that is drawn from one area of study – either Area of Study 1 or Area of Study 2. This task is worth 50 marks.

The two other assessment tasks are drawn from the area of study NOT used for the summary report. The two other assessment tasks are the written report of a practical activity, and one other task (selected from a response to stimulus material in written, oral or visual format; or an analysis of first or second-hand data using structured questions; or a report in written, oral, multimedia or visual format related to chemistry at work). Each of the two tasks is worth 25 marks.
