Music: Solo Performance

Time allocated for examination

A maximum of 25 minutes is allowed for the performance. Students should perform for as long as possible. Timing of the 25 minutes will start when the student is ready to perform. The student should begin their performance after the coordinating assessor announces their student number, the date, time, instrument and venue.

Time will be allocated for set-up prior to the commencement of the performance. The student will be given reasonable time to prepare (for example to settle, tune, adjust equipment) before commencing his/her performance. A mini-disk recording will be made of the performance. Before the performance commences the co-ordinating assessor will confirm the student’s VCAA examination number, the date, time, instrument and venue. 

If the performance is still in progress when the maximum time for performance (25 minutes) has been reached, the co-ordinating assessor will stop the performance.

Duration

Some works in the Prescribed list of notated solo works have been cited with a duration for performance. This information is provided as advice only and it is not expected that it will be adhered to strictly. Information regarding the duration of some works can also be obtained from commercial recordings.

However, it should be noted that duration may vary between recordings according to the artistic interpretation of each recording. In all cases, teachers and students should carefully time a selected program to ensure that it can be performed within the time allowed.

Venue and date of Music Performance

This will be organised by the VCAA. Notification of venue and date of the performance for each student will be sent to the student’s home school during second semester. Students performing on pipe organ, electronic organ and percussion will be advised about instrument specifications for the examination.

Recording of performances

The examination will be recorded and the recording may be sampled randomly to ensure comparability of conditions and assessment procedures.
