Credit Towards the VCE

Vocational Education and Training page banner

Students with full or partial completion of a nationally recognised Vocational Education and Training or Further Education (VET/FE) qualification may be eligible for credit towards the VCE.

Students are eligible for credit if they have completed, or are completing, training in a nationally recognised VET/FE qualification/s that is not included in the suite of approved VCE VET and School Based Apprenticeships and Traineeships programs.

Credit will be available for full or partial completion of a nationally recognised qualification, according to the conditions outlined below.

To be eligible for credit the student must be enrolled in the VCE. Students who have been enrolled in the VCE within the previous two years may also be eligible for credit.

VET Block Credit Recognition

Students with a current enrolment in VET/FE

Where students are completing training in a nationally recognised VET/FE qualification in 2008, they should be enrolled on Victorian Assessment Software System (VASS) in the certificate and all units of competence/modules expected to be completed in the current year only.

These students do not need to apply for credit as entry on VASS will calculate the level of credit students are entitled to, based on the formula below.

Students who have completed training in VET/FE prior to 2008

Where students have completed training in a nationally recognised VET/FE qualification prior to 2008, and have not previously had their details entered onto the VASS, they must apply to the VCAA, through the Victorian school at which they are enrolled.

Level of recognition within the VCE (VET Block Credit Recognition)

  • The formula for determining credit is based on nominal hours completed and related to the AQF level of the certificate. It is consistent with the approach taken in determining contribution within VCE VET programs, i.e., approximately 90 nominal hours is equivalent to one VCE VET unit credit in the VCE.
  • For certificates at AQF Level II, credit is granted at Units 1 and 2, subject to completion of sufficient hours of training.
  • For certificates at AQF Level III and above, credit is granted at Units 1 to 4, subject to completion of sufficient hours of training.
  • A Unit 3 and 4 sequence will be awarded on satisfactory completion at a minimum of 180 nominal hours, according to the rules outlined above.
  • Credit is to be awarded on the basis of achieving units of competence/modules. The level of credit is determined by the AQF level at which the units of competence/modules are recognised. Students who aggregate results from more than one program will be eligible for credit for all of their training, subject to completion of sufficient hours.
  • Where a student has completed two or more qualifications, or parts there of, within the same industry area, the highest AQF level of training achieved will be counted for credit.

For students enrolled in a VET/FE program, the amount of credit they are eligible for will be calculated and recorded on VASS. It will specify the number and level of units and/or Unit 3 and 4 sequences.

Where students apply for credit for training completed prior to 2008, decisions on the amount of credit granted will be made and recorded by the VCAA.

The award of credit will take into account issues of duplication with students' other VCE studies or VCE VET programs.
