Principals/Directors, VCE Coordinators, Teachers of VCE English as an Additional Language
Enrolment in VCE English as an Additional Language (EAL) Units 3‒4 is available only to students with approved EAL status. Some students are eligible for EAL on the grounds of hearing impairment. Eligibility criteria are provided in the VCE and VCAL Administrative Handbook.
Listening to texts
As outlined in Notice to Schools 29/2016 , the revised VCE EAL Study Design includes a Listening to texts Area of study.
Special Examination Arrangements will be available on application to ensure that the most appropriate, fair and reasonable arrangements can be accessed by students with a hearing impairment.
Applications will be managed through the existing Special Examination Arrangements process using the current eligibility criteria*.
Special Examination Arrangements may take the form of one or more of the following:
- extra working time
- use of a clarifier
- Microlink assistive technology
- access to audio-video stimulus with captions
*The VCAA requires evidence of moderate, severe or profound hearing loss to be eligible for Special Examination Arrangements
In Unit 3, EAL students complete a School-based Assessment of the Listening to texts outcome. Schools may approve special provisions for this assessment to accommodate the needs of students with a hearing impairment. Arrangements for School-based Assessment may reflect those listed above for the examination of the Listening to texts Area of study.
Schools are encouraged to contact VCAA Special Provision if unsure about the appropriateness of any proposed provisions.
- ensure all VCE EAL teachers are made aware of the arrangements available to any EAL student with a hearing impairment.
