Reviewer comments

“Girlfriend and I stayed here while on a weekend getaway. I figured we would have a nice view of the Harkston Gardens since the hotel is just next door, but when we checked into our room all we could see from the balcony was the back of another building! I called reception to ask if we could be moved to a room with a view but the receptionist was very rude and told us we had to stay where we were.
“The room itself was well-kept, but the décor needs updating. In fact, the whole hotel is past its prime. It’s a dark, brick building with heavy wooden panelling everywhere and just two cramped, ancient elevators.
“All in all, a pretty disappointing experience. I doubt we’ll be back.”

Response from Rudy Griffith – Rooms Division Manager at Austin Hotel
Responded 4 December 2020

“Dear Benjo01,

Thank you for your review. We are disappointed to hear that you didn’t enjoy your stay.

“Austin Hotel was built in 1910 and is on the National Heritage Register. Consequently, many of our building’s features (such as our original, antique elevators) are protected and cannot easily be changed. Whilst we appreciate that the hotel’s aesthetic was not to your tastes, we are proud of our history and have received many positive comments from guests who have praised our building’s unique and beautiful furnishings.

“Regarding your room: we are sorry if there was any confusion. However, our suites are clearly listed online as either ‘park view’ or ‘city view’ and priced accordingly (you booked a ‘city view’ suite). The team member you spoke with on the phone was not rude to you – she politely offered you the opportunity to upgrade to a ‘park view’ suite at a heavily discounted rate and, unfortunately, you declined this offer.

“Once again, we apologise for any inconvenience caused and hope you will consider staying with us again the next time you are in Harkston.”

Question: Tips for a First Year Apprentice

Posted by Jerry Jules 2 days ago

Hi all,

I’ve just started by construction apprenticeship this week (finally!) Days are super long and tiring but I’m enjoying it. Anyway, I was wondering if anyone had any tips or advice for me? I’m working with a great building company on a large commercial job and I really want to show that I’m worth having around.

  1. “Arrive early. Leave late.
  2. Leave the ego at the door.
  3. Anticipate what equipment is needed and have it ready.
  4. Bring doughnuts and / or get coffee.”

“You’re there to learn, so pay attention and ask questions. It’s always better to ask a stupid question than to pretend to know everything and then mess up something important.”

“Don’t just recognise that you’re on the bottom rung – embrace it. Be enthusiastic and volunteer to do the jobs that nobody else wants to do (note: you’ll probably get made to them anyway).”

“Never hide your mistakes. It’s far better to own up to a mistake early than to keep quiet about it and then have it become a huge issue later on (which I guaranteed you it will).”

“Do whatever you’re told within reason. Unfortunately, there are some tradies who disregard safety and expect their apprentices to do the same. If you don’t feel comfortable doing something you because you think it’s dangerous, be prepared to speak up about it and stick to your guns.”

“Carry essential tools like tape, marker, utility knife, drill, etcetera with you at all times. You want to be the person who can supply whatever tool is needed on hand right away.
“Always be doing something. If there isn’t anything obvious to do, just start tidying up the work site, organising gear and sweeping the floor etcetera”

Dear all staff,

Just a reminder that we will be closing for two weeks over the summer holidays from December 21 to January 4. The only people who will be around are Julie, Tyson and Richard (for the dry goods stocktake).

Last year, the place was left in a QUOTE “less-than-ideal” END QUOTE condition over the break, so I would like to clarify a few expectations for this year:

  1. All food and drink in the staff fridge should either be taken home or thrown out – no exceptions. I will not be cleaning out the fridge before I leave on the 18th of December. I strongly suggest you spend some time this week checking to see what’s your and acting accordingly. Do not leave this until your last shift (I already know what happens if you do).
  2. Food and drink for the restaurant should be dealt with as follows:
    • Anything perishable that will go off before our reopening date needs to be removed before we close on the 21st of December.
    • Anything that will still be good after we reopen must have the date clearly labelled and be stored appropriately.
    • Anything that is being kept which doesn’t need to go in the cold room should be stacked neatly in the dry store ready for the stocktake on the 28th.
  3. The place needs to be spotless before the summer closedown, as representatives from the Fabiano head office in Durley – including the CEO – will be visiting on January 6th. Preparing for this is everybody’s responsibility.

Finally, I am still waiting to hear back from some of you regarding availability for January, so it would be appreciated if you could get back to me about this before the 18th December.

Thank you all, and I hope everyone has a very safe and restful break.

Kind regards,
Trent Huxley
