VAL F–10 sample units of work

Units of work

The VCAA, in collaboration with the Victorian Aboriginal Education Association Inc. (VAEAI) and the Victorian Aboriginal Corporation for Languages (VACL), has developed sample Victorian Aboriginal Languages (VAL) units of work using culturally appropriate topics suitable for use with the VAL F–10 curriculum.

The sample units are provided as examples to illustrate how elements from the VAL F–10 curriculum could be organised by teachers into a teaching and learning program. They are not intended as prescribed or preferred topics for inclusion in a teaching and learning program or curriculum area plan. Further advice on implementing the VAL F–10 curriculum in schools is available in the planning resources section.

Sample units of work, Foundation to Level 6

These sample units of work have been developed to support teachers beginning to implement the Victorian Aboriginal Languages curriculum at Foundation to Level 6. They contain introductory advice on teaching Victorian Aboriginal Languages, including information on relevant protocols and key resources. They also contain comprehensive learning activities, including learning intentions, relevant Victorian Curriculum links, activities and games, assessment opportunities, and explicit instructions and tips for teachers.

Getting started, Foundation to Level 2

These three sample units of work were designed to engage beginner students and to be taught sequentially.

Getting started – 1. Community, Country and Languages, Foundation to Level 2

Getting started – 2. Greetings and routines, Foundation to Level 2

Getting started – 3. Sounds and spelling, Foundation to Level 2

Seasons, symbols and storytelling, Levels 3 to 6

These two sample units of work build students’ language skills, knowledge and understanding, focusing on their local Aboriginal context.

In ‘Seasons and Country – Winter-warinj’, students explore the winter season, looking at seasonal markers such as weather, shelter, clothing, keeping warm, plants, animals (including wombats) and the night sky.

In ‘Symbols and Storytelling’, students explore local and other Aboriginal symbols and stories used in a range of contexts. They use this knowledge to build and tell their own simple stories.
