Case studies

Planning and implementing the Victorian Mathematics Curriculum F–10

These two case study videos provide teachers and schools with a valuable resource to guide and demystify the curriculum planning process for Mathematics. The videos provide examples from a primary and secondary school context on how schools can plan for and implement the Mathematics curriculum within the broader school context, as well as within the classroom. The case studies provide real examples of how schools went about identifying gaps in student knowledge and learning, and how to do this through curriculum planning. The videos also highlight how schools can access and implement various curriculum planning and assessment tools and resources developed by the VCAA.

Camberwell South Primary School

Camberwell South Primary school have implemented a data template and protocol in relation to mathematics curriculum planning, to support a targeted approach to teaching. The data template is a spreadsheet that aligns class assessment tasks with the relevant Victorian Curriculum F–10 Mathematics content descriptions and achievement standards. The template allows teachers to map the content descriptions covered in the class to the section of the achievement standard that describes what a student is able to understand and do. Teachers can use the data as an indication of what the student is ready to learn next or areas where a student may need further support. This approach provides teachers with a strong evidence base they can use to track student progress and plan lessons and assessment to support each individual student.
