VCE on a Northern Hemisphere Timetable - English and English as an Additional Language

The VCE on a Northern Hemisphere Timetable (NHT) operates from July to June. Only authorised providers may offer VCE English and English as an Additional Language (EAL) on the Northern Hemisphere Timetable.

Study Design – Accreditation period Unit 1 and 2: 2016–2022; Units 3 and 4: 2017–2023

The accreditation period for Units 1 and 2 has been extended and expires for the NHT on 30 June 2023.
The accreditation period for Units 3 and 4 has been extended and expires for the NHT on 30 June 2024.

This study design is to be used for the 2022–2023 NHT.

For English Units 3 and 4 and EAL Units 3 and 4, the text list is modified to reflect the specific selection of texts being studied by students enrolled in the NHT, as advised by authorised providers.

Study design for implementation in NHT 2023-2024

Teachers are advised that the study design listed below is for use on the NHT from July 2023 for Units 1 and 2. This is available to teachers in preparation for the implementation of the new study in 2023. Additional resources will be added progressively as they become available.

For accreditation period Units 1 and 2: 2023-2027 (NHT July 2023 to June 2028); Units 3 and 4: 2024-2027 (NHT July 2024 to June 2028)

In NHT 2022-2023, schools must ensure they use the VCE English and English as an Additional Language Study Design Units 1 and 2: 2016-2022; Units 3 and 4: 2017-2023.


Eligibility criteria for students seeking English as Additional Language (EAL) Status

Students who are unfamiliar with the English language because they are from non-English-speaking backgrounds or who are deaf or hard of hearing may have access to English as an Additional Language (EAL) status. For eligibility criteria please refer to the VCE and VCAL Administrative HandbookAdministrative information: Student enrolment, Students seeking EAL status.

To apply for EAL status, each student is required to submit an Application for Enrolment in English as an Additional Language Units 3 and 4 form to the school, please see the enrolment application form.
