  • Establish an agreed methodology (e.g. color-coding, initialing, bracketing, underlining).
  • Skim-read the target passage noting sense units indicated by punctuation and grammatical signposts.
  • Break each sentence into its component clauses and phrases.
  • Identify the function of words as indicated by their inflections.
  • Identify the type of each clause and phrase.
  • Establish the meaning of each component.
  • With lexical assistance, translate the passage into English.
  • Respond in writing to questions on the linguistic features of the passage.
