Structured workplace learning

What is structured workplace learning?

Structured Workplace Learning (SWL) is a program that lets you gain real-world experience in a workplace related to your VET studies. It's like getting a sneak peek into your future career while you're still in school.

If you're doing VCE, VCE Vocational Major (VCE VM), or the Victorian Pathways Certificate (VPC), SWL can be part of your studies.

How does SWL fit into my VET studies?

It helps you understand how the skills you're learning in class apply in the real world.

SWL is highly recommended for all VET studies and for some subjects work placement is compulsory. The duration of SWL varies depending on your VET subject requirements. Your school or training provider will help you schedule your SWL to fit with your studies.

Why do SWL?

If you are doing a VCE VET subject, SWL gives you the opportunity to get on-the-job training, supporting you to:

  • Gain real-world insight – you'll spend time in a real workplace, doing tasks related to your VET subject.
  • Build confidence – get experience that makes you more confident in your skills.
  • Improve employability – having workplace experience looks great on your resume.
  • Make informed choices – decide if a particular career path is right for you.
  • Network – you'll meet professionals in the industry

Learning recognition and credit

Workplace learning record

If you undertake structured workplace learning, you can gain additional credit towards your VCE, VCE VM or VPC by completing the workplace learning record.

The workplace learning record allows you to record your experience and reflect on what you have learned in the workplace.

Credit towards the VCE, VCE VM or VPC

Successfully completing 80 hours of structured workplace learning with 20 hours class work linked to your VET subject, can provide credit for the VCE, VCE VM or VPC.

You will complete a workplace learning record, which allows you to record your experience and reflect on what you have learned in the workplace.

You can get up to 2 credits at units 1 and 2 for structured workplace learning recognition towards your VCE, VCE VM or VPC.

How do I get started?

Talk to your school's careers counsellor or VET coordinator. They can help you find a suitable workplace and guide you through the process.
