New Health and Physical Education resource – Movement Assessment in Practice (MAP) platform

An exciting new F–10 Health and Physical education resource is available.

The Movement Assessment in Practice (MAP) platform delivers evidence-based fundamental movement skill (FMS) assessments to Health and Physical Education teachers in one easy-to-access, user-friendly platform.

When using the MAP platform, teachers are encouraged to choose relevant movement skill assessments as diagnostic and formative assessment tools to inform their teaching. The MAP forms a foundation upon which teaching can be targeted to student needs, maximising the potential for optimal learning of movement skills.

The MAP platform provides Health and Physical Education teachers with 5 valid, reliable and feasible movement skill assessments that can be incorporated into their teaching and learning programs. These include fundamental movement skill assessments (locomotor and object control skills and stability skills), and combined movement skills.

The platform includes a filtering system for the age of students and skill category and provides teachers with easy-to-follow descriptions and diagrams of the movement skill assessments, along with supporting videos and resources. Downloadable automated Excel scorecards that analyse the student data collected and provide teachers with a clear picture of what their students need to learn are also available.

The MAP has been written in collaboration with Samantha Snow, Deakin University (PhD candidate and Health and Physical Education teacher). ACHPER Victoria staff have also contributed to the development of support materials.

National Assessment Program – Literacy and Numeracy

2023 results release

NAPLAN reporting has changed in 2023 to incorporate a set of nationally agreed reforms.

In mid-July, schools received their NAPLAN reporting packages, containing a printed Individual Student Report (ISR) for each student who participated in NAPLAN. From this year onward, individual student results are reported against new proficiency standards set at the following four levels:

  • Exceeding
  • Strong
  • Developing
  • Needs additional support

The proficiency standards have been introduced to align with the completion of the NAPLAN online transition in 2022. The proficiency standards replace the 10-band reporting scale and national minimum standards in place since NAPLAN was introduced in 2008. The new NAPLAN scale in intended to provide a more meaningful measure of how students are progressing at the time of testing.

For more information on the NAPLAN reporting reforms and the new proficiency standards, visit the ACARA website at ACARA NAP.

The VCAA has also launched the school Data Service with a suite of item level, student and school reports for NAPLAN 2023.

NAPLAN 2023 national report

The NAPLAN 2023 national report is expected to be released by ACARA later in August. The VCAA will notify schools of the report’s release, along with the schedule of updates to the VCAA Data Service to include state and national NAPLAN data.

Staff support

As in previous years, the VCAA will be offering professional development sessions for school staff in Term 4 on how to use and interpret the reports in the VCAA Data Service.

Further details on how to register for the sessions will be available later in Term 3.

Support for NAPLAN is available via the VCAA NAPLAN Helpdesk at 1800 648 637 or by email at vcaa.naplan.help@education.vic.gov.au.
