Top Class Sound and Music Program 2022

Top Class Sound and Music – Monday 21 March 2022

Welcome to Top Class Sound and Music, presented by the Victorian Curriculum and Assessment Authority as part of the VCE Season of Excellence 2022.

Each year, our Top Class concerts give current VCE performing arts students a valuable insight into what is required to achieve an outstanding score in VCE Performing Arts studies. The concerts encourage and inspire students during their examination preparation and provide a benchmark and realistic examples of best practice.

In a Season of Excellence first, we have combined our Top Class Sound and Music concerts to bring you an exciting program featuring exceptionally talented composers and performers who achieved very high marks in VCE Music subjects in 2021.

The following program has been curated by VCE examiners across each of the VCE Music studies. The carefully selected artists demonstrate incredible dedication to their craft, applying their passion to study and practice, and evolving their skills to receive exceptional VCE results and to perform for us in this concert series.

The broad range of works by these bright young musicians showcases their technical and interpretive abilities, their unique styles and their devotion to their artistry. We could not be prouder of what they have achieved, particularly considering the circumstances of their senior school years.

We thank the composers and performers for their commitment and generosity in working with us to present these concerts.

Thank you also to the following selection panel members for their work on these programs:

VCE Music Performance and VCEC Music Investigation:

David Ashfield, Elizabeth Barwell, Brian Czempinski, Megan George, Pepita Gillies, Helen Jackson, Rod Marshall, Lynne Morton, Tim Nikolsky, David Oxley, Belinda Parsons, Manfred Pohlenz, Fiona Rocke, Greg Ryan

VCE VET Music Industry (Performance):

Judy McLaren, Bill Miles, Robert Willard-Turton

VCE Music Style and Composition:

Matt Pankhurst, Philippa Robinson, Kim Thomsen

VCE VET MUSIC INDUSTRY (PERFORMANCE)

VCE VET Music Industry (Performance) provides students with the knowledge and skills to enhance their employment prospects within the music industry. In the Certificate III in Music Industry qualification studied within VCE VET Music Industry, students can apply a broad range of knowledge and skills in varied work contexts.

Depending on the electives chosen, Units 1 and 2 include understanding the music industry, exploring style and genre, producing a demo, song writing and incorporating music technology. Units 3 and 4 offer scored assessment and include units of competency, such as developing improvisation and stagecraft skills, preparing for performances, and performing music as part of a group or as a soloist.

As part of the VCE VET Music Industry performance examination, students must prepare an Industry Statement outlining their area of specialisation, stylistic focus and the potential marketfor their performance. This information provides a context against which students are assessed, using criteria covering technique accuracy and control, expressiveness, rhythm and timing, phrasing, originality and innovation, listening and stagecraft.

In the performance examination, solo students present a recital-style performance on an instrument of their choice. They perform at least four works selected from the prescribed list of notated solo works. Students performing in a group are assessed individually. Groups can consist of assessed performers and non-assessed accompanists and perform at least four works from the prescribed list of notated group works.

Students must demonstrate technical accuracy, control and flexibility, as well as project their musical intentions and interpretations in a range of styles. Group students must also demonstrate their ability to perform as a member of a music group.

VCE MUSIC STYLE AND COMPOSITION

In VCE Music Style and Composition Unit 4, students create an original music work inspired by the study of music from different styles and traditions. They document their creative processes from initial intention through to completed work. Students develop skills in forming and presenting critical responses to music excerpts. They also analyse the use of contrast, repetition and variation.

Students investigate the music characteristics and style of two selected works or collections of minor works, one of which was created after 1910. They develop an understanding of the processes used to create the works and how contextual issues may have influenced the creative process.

VCE MUSIC PERFORMANCE

Music Performance Units 1−4 offers students with varied music interests an opportunity to develop knowledge and skills through the study of performance, performance technique and musicianship. The performance examination requires students to develop informed interpretations of a program of works, and to present a musically engaging performance of that program to an audience. Students may perform as a member of a group or as a soloist.

VCE MUSIC INVESTIGATION

Music Investigation Units 3−4 challenges students to design an investigation into a specific area of music, focusing on representative performance practices. The investigation involves study of repertoire, performance conventions and techniques, as well as the creation of a composition, improvisation or arrangement that reflects the characteristics of the Focus Area. The performance examination for Music Investigation requires students to present a diverse program of works relating to the Focus Area. Students may present their performance as a member of a group or as a soloist.
