Victorian schools will soon be able to access a new Recognition of Learning Statement to acknowledge students whose learning is not reflected through existing senior secondary certificates.

The Statement gives schools an inclusive way to recognise students at the end of schooling where the VCE, including the VCE Vocational Major (VCE VM), or the Victorian Pathways Certificate (VPC) is not achievable due to individual circumstances. For students, it delivers official recognition of their learning journey and acknowledges the effort, resilience and engagement they have shown throughout their schooling. It also provides a meaningful way to mark the end of formal schooling.

Principals’ Association of Specialist Schools president and Lake Colac School principal Cameron Peverett is looking forward to implementing the statement this year.

“It’s wonderful to have the acknowledgement that our students have worked their guts out to get through their full schooling experience – as through no fault of their own, they may not have been able to achieve a fully qualified certificate,” Cameron said.

The Recognition of Learning Statement is a principal-attested statement of acknowledgement provided at the conclusion of a student’s schooling. It recognises meaningful engagement in learning, rather than formal academic attainment, and will be available to eligible students from all Victorian schools.

The Recognition of Learning Statement was developed by the VCAA in close consultation with external stakeholders, whose contribution was fundamental to its development.

Their expertise, experience and understanding of diverse learning journeys directly shaped the purpose, structure and design of the Statement, including how students are recognised, valued and affirmed at the completion of schooling.

Registrations for schools will open this year at the end of Term 3.
