Assessments

The DAL provides a comprehensive suite of assessments that allow teachers to understand student learning, both generally and in regard to specific areas of the curriculum. There are over 300 DAL assessments available for English, Mathematics, Science and Health and Physical Education that can be used flexibly to support summative and formative assessment practices at the discretion of teachers to best suit their learning programs.

This table describes the different assessment types found on the DAL.
BranchedThe Branched assessments cover key aspects of the Victorian Mathematics and English curriculum assessing numeracy and literacy capabilities students need in their personal, work and civic lives.
Achievement LevelThe achievement level assessments are the broadest, covering content from across the curriculum to give an indication of the student’s relative placement within that level.
Strand/
Sub-strand/
Skills
Strand and sub-strand assessments are targeted to specific aspects of the curriculum (for example, English Language Skills).
FocusFocus assessments provide detailed information about students’ learning, within a relatively narrow (or singular) aspect of the curriculum.

In addition to be used in a broad range of context, the assessments support the implementation of the Victorian Teaching and Learning Model 2.0 and the support the Victorian Lesson Plans.
