Level 2 Sample 1 Speaking and listening

Task Summary

The student was asked to create a short story loosely based on a familiar story. The student chose to write The Three Little Rabbits, and the student then performed their story to the class. Before this, the student had discussed the difference between telling a story and reading a story. The students had also read and orally retold a text.

Imaginative retelling

Duration: 2 minutes 6 seconds

The student:

Plans and delivers spoken presentations using appropriate structure and language.

Speaks audibly and clearly to a familiar audience.

Uses some precise vocabulary from learning areas ('Once upon a time').

Uses mainly correct grammatical constructions ('they were', 'they went', 'the other one built').

Provides some supporting details ('pile of grass', 'blowed all the grass away').

Sequences ideas and events appropriately, using connectives ('and then').

Elaborates on ideas using a short sequence of sentences.

Planning the next stage of student learning

When planning the next stage of the teaching and learning program to progress this student's learning, focus on the following skills and knowledge:

Level 2

  • Identify, reproduce and experiment with rhythmic, sound and word patterns in poems, chants, rhymes and songs (VCELT243)
  • Rehearse and deliver short presentations on familiar and new topics, speaking clearly and varying tone, volume and pace appropriately, and using supportive props (VCELY245)
  • Understand that spoken, visual and written forms of language are different modes of communication with different features and their use varies according to the audience, purpose, context and cultural background (VCELA234)
  • Understand the use of vocabulary about familiar and new topics and experiment with and begin to make conscious choices of vocabulary to suit audience and purpose (VCELA237)

Level 3

  • Plan and deliver short presentations, providing some key details in logical sequence, using appropriate tone, pace, pitch and volume (VCELY276)
