Unit 4 Area of Study 1: Demonstrating techniques of solo performance

Demonstrate, in response to given stimulus material, application of symbol and transformation of character, time and place, and describe the techniques used.

Examples of learning activities

  • Example icon for advice for teachers
    Explore ways to devise a one-to-two-minute solo performance that need not be polished but, rather, focuses on demonstrating application of symbol and transformation of character, time and place.
  • Use stimulus material, such as a person, an image, one word or an icon, create a series of  10-second vignettes that show the character in a range of situations.
  • Transition from one situation to another using a different transformation technique each time.
  • Trial ways of applying symbol to enhance meaning across the vignettes.
  • Use a mobile device to record the vignettes. Annotate the images to explain in 50 words or less the application of symbol and transformation techniques evident in the vignettes.

Solo performance

Students use the following stimulus material to develop a short solo performance.

Performance focus:

At a future festival in present-day Melbourne Australia, the Solarpunk outlines their vision for the future of Melbourne.

Students complete the following activities:

  1. Research the stimulus material; for example, explore the meaning of 'solarpunk' through brainstorming, creating imagery, finding and/or creating a definition.
  2. Create a series of 10-second vignettes that show the character in a range of situations; for example, on a street corner in Melbourne, at home, in conversation with a friend, responding to a challenge.
  3. Transition from one situation to another using a different transformation technique each time.
  4. Trial ways of applying symbol to enhance meaning across the vignettes.
  5. Use a mobile device to record the vignettes. 
  6. Annotate the images to explain in no more than 50 words the application of symbol and transformation techniques evident in the vignettes.
