The diagram shows a set-up for the apparatus used to measure the refraction of light.
Light (represented by a solid straight line) from a laser pointer (represented by a circle on the left of the diagram) passes along a horizontal path through the triangular tank ( a triangle in the centre of the diagram) and is deflected downwards onto a screen (represented by a vertical line).
The horizontal distance between the point of exit of light from the tank to the screen is shown by a dotted line and represented by the capital letter L.
The distance between the points on the screen where the light hits the screen after deflection and where the dotted vertical line hits the screen is represented by the lower case letter ‘d’.
