Literacy and Numeracy Learning Progressions

A comprehensive collection of new evidence-based Literacy and Numeracy Learning Progressions has been released to support teachers in deepening their understanding of sequential literacy and numeracy learning. They are based on the Literacy and Numeracy Learning Progressions developed by the Australian Curriculum, Assessment and Reporting Authority (ACARA), but have been adapted for use in the Victorian context and aligned to the Victorian Curriculum F–10. They can be used as a tool to support professional learning in literacy and numeracy for all teachers in Victorian schools.

The Literacy and Numeracy Learning Progressions provide a detailed map of how students become increasingly adept in 12 aspects of literacy and 15 areas of numeracy, and are designed to help teachers develop targeted teaching and learning programs. The nuanced and detailed descriptions of student learning within each Learning Progression provide practical information about what students can say, make, do or write as they develop their literacy and numeracy skills. The Literacy and Numeracy Learning Progressions are not a new curriculum, and are not mandated for use. The resource is designed to support all teachers in their work as teachers of literacy and numeracy across all areas of the Victorian Curriculum.

The Literacy Learning Progressions and Numeracy Learning Progressions have been published on the English and Mathematics teaching resources pages of the VCAA website, respectively.

Promoting the language assessment resources

VCAA staff, along with colleagues from the Australian Council for Educational Research (ACER), have been promoting the new suite of VCAA language assessment resources at a number of conferences run by language teachers' associations. Developed in partnership with ACER, the Language Assessments are designed to support teachers implementing the Victorian Curriculum F–10 Languages curriculum.

The presenters highlighted how the online Language Assessments:

  • support the teaching of Victorian Curriculum Languages from Levels 5–6 onward
  • provide a useful diagnostic tool of students' listening and reading skills
  • are an online bank of test items, available any time
  • provide teachers with immediate results
  • are available at no cost to all Victorian schools.

At the Japanese Language Teachers' Association of Victoria's conference, Sean Pratt, a leading teacher of Japanese at Ivanhoe Grammar School, shared his experience with 60 other teachers. Sean found the VCAA Japanese Language Assessments easy to set up and administer, liked being able to obtain instant results, and has begun to use them to complement other forms of assessment.

Along with Japanese, the VCAA Language Assessments also support teaching and learning programs in Chinese, French, German, Indonesian, Italian, Modern Greek and Spanish. More information is available from the VCAA F–10 Curriculum – Languages webpage.
